From farm to freedom: discover the Jarikhanda Animal sanctuary
Dear animal lovers, today I would like to tell you about the Jarikhanda animal shelter near Zlín. I have been donating to this shelter for a long time and we managed to visit this place once. So let’s go there together.

How it all began on Jarikhanda
Imagine you have dreamed of creating a safe haven for animals since you were a child. That’s exactly what happened to Vendy, the founder of Jarikhanda. In 2015, her dream became a reality when she opened the doors to one of the first shelters for farm animals in the Czech Republic in Březůvky, near Zlín.
Since then, Jarikhanda has become home to dozens of animals that would otherwise have ended up… well, don’t even think about it. Cows, horses, piglets, sheep, goats, chickens and even cats and dogs have all found a new home here.
Life on the farm
Vendy explains their philosophy: “With us, everyone lives their life without being robbed. We leave the milk for the chicks and the eggs for the hens.
Walking around the farm we met many interesting inhabitants. For example, Hanz the pig, who originally lived in a flat on the fifth floor with no lift! His former owners thought that such a pet didn’t need to be walked. Now Hanz is enjoying life on the farm with his friends Arnost and Piggy.
How Jarikhanda is funded and how you can help
Running the Jarikhanda Asylum Farm is a complex challenge that requires considerable effort and resources. It is run primarily through the dedication of volunteers and the financial support of donors. Every donation makes a difference.
Jarikhanda uses a transparent accounting system that allows donors to see how their contributions are used. All funds raised are invested solely in the care of the animals at the sanctuary. In addition to financial donations, the farm also values material support in the form of feed, hay and breeding supplies, which are continually needed to ensure the quality of care for the animals.
If Jarikhanda’s story resonates with you, there are many ways you can help:
- Financial donation – you can also support Jarikhanda through a transparent account:

Once or regularly. - Material help – feed, hay or other materials are always needed.
- Volunteering – if you have the time and inclination, you can come and help directly on the farm.
- Distance adoption – you can “adopt” an animal and contribute to its care.
- Spreading awareness – tell your friends about Jarikhanda, share their stories on social media.

The Power of Compassion project by filmmaking duo Jan Fuksa and Jakub Maceja
The Jarikhanda sanctuary cooperates with the Brno-based activist group Kolektiv pro zvířata. This collaboration has resulted in a documentary series called “The Power of Compassion“, which shows life at the sanctuary and the people who have given up their comfort for the animals. The first part of the series, “You are safe here“, focuses on Jarikhanda and introduces viewers to the fate of the nearly 80 animals who have found a home there.
A new series, Forces of Compassion, has also recently been created, with one episode dedicated to Jarikhanda’s outlying unit – Babette’s Grove. This episode features both Vendy (from Zlín and Prague) and Hanka from the association Life Without Cruelty. These documentary projects not only raise awareness of the work of sanctuaries, but also highlight the contrast between the lives of animals on factory farms and in sanctuaries.
What are the objectives of Jarikhanda?
The Jarikhanda Asylum Farm has several main objectives:
- To create a harmonious environment where people and animals live in mutual love
- To provide a safe haven for livestock. Jarikhanda is one of the first farm animal shelters in the Czech Republic where cows, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, cats and dogs have found a home.
- Allowing animals to survive life without being exploited for production. No animal products are consumed or produced on the farm. The milk is left for the chicks and the eggs for the hens.
- Live in accordance with ecological principles. The farm aims to leave the smallest possible footprint on the planet. They strive to live locally and waste-free.
- To run a permaculture farm whose crops they share with the animals.
- Raise awareness of the needs of farm animals and promote compassionate treatment.
- Provide a second chance to animals rescued from factory farming or unsuitable home conditions.
Visit Jarikhanda Asylum and see for yourself
If you are going to pass by Zlín, be sure to stop in Březůvkách. Just remember that visits are possible by prior arrangement.
Finally, I would like to say that Jarikhanda is not just an animal sanctuary. It is a place where humanity, compassion and love for nature meet. It is proof that even a small group of determined people can change the world – at least for those animals who have been given a second chance at life.
So, friends, will you join in supporting Jarikhanda? Together, we can make this world a little better place – for the animals and for us.
