How to do Tenerife whale and dolphin watching responsibly? With Bahriyeli
Animal lovers and adventurers! Today I’ll tell you about a trip with Bahriyeli, a company that’s doing something truly exceptional in Tenerife. Imagine sailing on a beautiful schooner and suddenly spotting whales and dolphins in the wild! And all this without harming these amazing creatures in any way. Awesome, right? Bahriyeli isn’t just your ordinary tourist attraction. These sailors really have their hearts in the right place. Their ship may be old (from 1990), but their approach to marine life conservation is super modern. No chasing whales or dolphins – they let them swim as they please. After all, you’d be nervous too if someone was constantly following you, wouldn’t you?
Bahriyeli is the only company in all of Spain that collaborates with the legendary organization Sea Shepherd. Yes, that Sea Shepherd that’s not afraid to stand up to whalers and other marine villains. Part of the money from your tickets goes directly to support their fight for ocean conservation. So you’ll enjoy a great trip and help a good cause at the same time!

On board with a marine biologist
A marine biologist is on board to tell you all about the amazing animals you’ll see. I listened to his commentary with great hope for change in marine conservation. And don’t worry if you don’t speak Spanish – the guides also speak English, German and French.
Not only will you see incredible animals, but you will also feel good about your contribution to their conservation.
Barbaric Danes and Japanese
Animal lovers, what I learned from my guide on the cruise only makes me more convinced of how far we are from living ethically. Prepare yourself for some very sad reading. Something is happening in the Faroe Islands that will make you want to cry. Imagine, they have this “tradition” called Grindadrap. Sounds like a cool Viking party, doesn’t it? Well, unfortunately it’s quite the opposite. The locals play big heroes and chase dolphins and whales into the bays where they brutally kill them. In 2021, a whopping 1,428 white-sided pilot whales were killed in this way. The sea turns red and the beach is littered with carcasses. All because it’s supposedly “part of their culture”. Really? In the 21st century?
And to make matters worse, a similar horror is taking place in Japan, specifically in Taiji Bay. They call it ‘dolphin hunting’, but it’s just as horrific. Fishermen herd dolphins into the bay, where they either kill them for meat or select the “prettiest” for the dolphinarium. Those that survive are condemned to a life in captivity, entertaining tourists. The others end up as “traditional delicacy”. This is cruel, inhumane and completely unnecessary. In both cases, these are outdated customs that have no place in the modern world. It is time we stood up for the rights of these amazing sea creatures and put an end to these barbaric practices!
How to sail for dolphins differently
Bahriyeli also thinks about the environment in small ways. No more disposable plastic cups! Instead, one euro buys a glass that you can keep as a souvenir. A small thing that makes a big difference to the ocean! During your cruise you can see all sorts of amazing creatures – from giant sperm whales to cute sea turtles. All without disturbing their natural habitat.
When, how much and where to sail to Tenerife
Bahriyeli offers two-hour whale and dolphin watching cruises known as “Whale Photo-Safari”. These trips take place daily with departures at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00.
And the prices?
Adults pay €20, children from 2 to 12 pay €12 and toddlers pay just €5.
So if you’re coming to Tenerife and want to experience something really special, get on board with Bahriyeli. Not only will you see incredible animals, but you’ll also feel good knowing that you’ve contributed to their conservation. And honestly, isn’t that what travel should be all about?
