In June 2025, during my travels across Japan, I visited Tokyo, Lake Kawaguchiko, Kyoto, and Osaka. Although this time I didn\u2019t volunteer at any dog shelters<\/a>, I encountered many domestic and wild animals. Today I\u2019ll focus only on the negative experiences and impressions from Tokyo, where tourists \u2014 especially on Takeshita Street \u2014 become part of the commercial exploitation of animals for entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Takeshita Street: Paradise for Tourists or Hell for Animals?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Takeshita Street in Harajuku<\/a> has in recent years turned into a kind of \u201czoo street\u201d with eight animal caf\u00e9s. Visitors can pay to pet capybaras, miniature pigs, hedgehogs, owls, Samoyed dogs, and even ferrets. For tourists, it\u2019s an entertaining experience, but the reality of these establishments is much darker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
